Practitioners ask: Why is a failed login on one account urgent and on another noise? What turns a username into a priority?
Two identities with identical authentication signals can demand opposite responses. Identity context is the set of attributes and relationships that change what an actor means for security—not what the account is called in a directory export.

Prefer explicit unknown context over inherited assumptions from the most convenient feed.

Limitations
Context can be incomplete, stale, or politically sensitive (executive access, break-glass accounts). Document assumptions and validation gaps; do not treat group membership alone as full privilege understanding.

Why this matters for security decisions
Analysts rarely lack authentication logs—they lack situational meaning about the actor. Context tells you whether a login is routine user activity or a path to domain administration, whether an API call matches an expected service pattern, and whether an account should exist at all. Decisions without identity context optimize for generic alert rules while leaving privilege paths and lifecycle risk unaddressed.
