What practitioners need to know
Practitioners ask: Why does the same malware alert rank higher on an admin workstation? How do we scope containment when credentials are involved?
Privilege is what an identity can do—admin roles, domain control, cloud super-user bindings, vault access, and application-level rights. Blast radius is how much could be affected if that identity is abused. Together they explain why identical technical signals on different actors produce different decisions.

- Map effective privilege at decision time—not only group labels.
- State blast radius explicitly in triage notes and handoffs.
- Prioritize identity containment (sessions, keys, roles) alongside host isolation.

Limitations
Effective privilege is often harder to compute than directory membership suggests. Application-level rights, cross-cloud federation, and break-glass processes require stated confidence when data is incomplete.

Why this matters for security decisions
Identical alerts do not imply identical impact. Privilege tells analysts how much an actor can reach; blast radius turns that reach into explainable scope for escalation, executive communication, and proportional response. Decisions that ignore privilege optimize for rule noise while leaving high-impact credential abuse under-prioritized or under-contained.
